A Walk in the Woods With
Biologist David Benzing
As a child, did a parent or some other adult ever take you for a springtime walk in an Ohio woods to see our many kinds of early blooming wild flowers? If so, do you remember how to distinguish a blood root from a trillium, or a toothwort from wild ginger? If you wish to learn this and additional woodland lore, or if you simply want to refresh old memories, reserve 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, for just such an opportunity. Biologist David Benzing will lead interested individuals to a wooded site almost directly across the road from the winery. Young children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. April 26 will be our rain date.
Please make reservations by calling 440-965-5202, and indicate the number of individuals in your party. We will not run the tour if there are fewer than 12 persons.
Sunday Wine Sales Have Begun!
We’ll continue with wine sales every Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
Frozen Grapes: The Vineyard's First Ice Wine!
In the next few months, wine enthusiasts will be able to buy the Vineyard’s first bottles of Ice Wine. Ice wine is a delicious dessert wine that dates to Roman times, when frozen grapes were used to make wine.
Vitis vinifera grapes are typically used, such as Chardonnay or Riesling. Grapes are picked when they’re frozen at temperatures below 20° F. The water in the grapes freezes, and when the grapes are pressed out what remains is a concentrated sweet and flavorful juice. Twice as sweet as typical grapes, the juice still needs to be fermented.
According to Joe Fowler, our winegrower, 35 gallons of Vermilion Valley Vineyards Ice Wine will be bottled. We’ll let you know when this precious wine will be released.
